Crop Spotlight: Rice

Author Major Category

Since we have been bringing you the Crop Spotlight on Crops that have little to no value on the Crafting side of things as of late, we decided it is best to show you one of the very best for all of you Crafters out there – and one that can certainly be an asset to low level farmers and high rollers alike. So sit back and strap in while we tap into what makes the Rice Crop such an intriguing option when over a hundred of others exist.

Rice is fairly unique, isn’t it? We suppose that is one of the initial reasons for planting it; you get sick of seeing the one old seedlings being spelunk’d into the soil, so seeing something that rarely pops up in FarmVille, like a Crop submerged in water, catches the eye. You could say the love affair with the Rice Crop starts out as a fickle relationship, since it has to do with the looks rather than the value of the Crop itself.

The Crop is available for farmers that are Level 7 and above, making it an incredibly low leveled Crop. It was the first of the 12 hour Crops to be made available at the start of FarmVille, as the Wheat Crop was not originally a 12 hour Crop; once the introduction of the Crafting Buildings took place, Zynga made the Wheat Crop a 12 hour Crop, as it was so heavily used in recipes and such. Still, Rice is the original 12 hour Crop, making it a FarmVille stalwart.

In terms of how Rice stacks up against the competition, it is not too impressive, given the fact that it is the one and only originator of that specific timeframe. The Rice Crop costs 45 Coins to plant per plot, and gives the user back 96 Coins when it comes time to harvest, thus giving you a net profit sum of 51 Coins. This is, frankly, a terrible Crop for financial purposes, even for lower leveled new players on the virtual farming circuit. If you are planting Rice, chances are it is not to make money.

For example, the Rice Crop is only three Coins better than the Wheat Crop, which is one of the least profitable in all of FarmVille. If you want to compare how poor the Rice Crop’s net gain actually is, look no further than the Strawberries – the first Crop available in all of FarmVille — which gives you 75 Coins for every three harvests. Considering the Strawberry is a 4 hour Crop, you can fit three harvests into a single Rice Crop’s harvest time. And just think, that is the first Crop available in the game! If we are solely looking at 12 hour Crops, there are no comparables; Rice just doesn’t stack up competitively on the Coin front. It only gives 1 EXP point per plot planting, as well.

Just as we mentioned earlier, the main reason for planting Rice is that, if you have a Market Stall, you will gain much attraction from your many neighbors. Why? Because the Winery and the Bakery both heavily use Rice in many, many recipes. Unfortunately, the Spa does not use Rice for anything at this time, but practically every Winery and/or Bakery owner can definitely use some Rice practically every day for their Crafting Building of choice – meaning that they will constantly visit your Market Stall and purchase Bushels from you, giving you additional Fuel, EXP or even Coins.

While the Spa owners are left out of the fun, Rice is used frequently in several types of beverages and beyond at the Winery, and can be used in several different foodstuff recipes at the Bakery. All in all, you are looking at a total of five recipes that can be concocted using Rice in the Bakery, and a total of four recipes where Rice is used in the Winery, for a grand total of nine recipes. That’s a wide variety of Crafts to be made from one base Crop!

The Mastery Levels of the Rice Crop feature a couple of levels as the same exact amount – both at 400 for Level 1 and Level 2 – and then a huge spike to bring the total up much higher, requiring 2,000 on Level 3. This is slightly unusual, given the fact that there is usually a spike between the first and second Levels. Please remember that you can use a Rice Bushel before you harvest and receive Double Mastery; if you are harvesting during a Double Mastery event, use a Rice Bushel and you will receive Triple Mastery on the Rice Crop instead of just Double Mastery.

Here are the current Rice Crop’s Mastery totals:

Mastery Level 1: 400 Harvests
Mastery Level 2: 400 Harvests
Mastery Level 3: 2,000 Harvests
Grand Total: 2,800 Harvests

Stay tuned to FarmVille Post for more information on the Rice Crop and many, many others!
