Crop Spotlight: Nachos

Author Major Category ,

It’s a blast from the past, or at least a month ago, here at FarmVille Post! While we are waiting on the arrival of the English Countryside, enjoy this Crop Spotlight on one of our all-time favorite Limited Edition Crops, Nachos! Let us know what your favorite Limited Edition Crop is in the comments!

There was an onslaught of new Crops that had arrived in FarmVille over the course of the past couple of months. This time last month, we were entirely too caught up in the hype surrounding the Super Bowl and all of the food we were going to devour that when Zynga blindsided us with fourteen new Crops over the course of that weekend. Needless to say, it felt like we were sacked by the Lions’ Ndamukong Suh.

While we are still studying the incredible effects that the new Greenhouse Hybrid Crops will have on planting in general within FarmVille, including their insane amount of buyback when it comes time to chop them down for harvest, we figured it might be proper to introduce to you our long-in-the-making Crop Spotlight for one of our all-time favorite Crops in the game, and one we have been planning to Spotlight despite a complete lack of all functions, the Nachos.

We would usually have a long list of items to discuss with a Crop Spotlight, such as which recipes the Crop can be used in, or even taking a quick glance at what types of flowers it could produce for your Garden Shed… Things of that nature. But with any interesting Limited Edition Crop, we will instead give you the full history of the Nacho Crop, which is certainly nothing new to FarmVille, despite re-emerging onto the scene amidst the many, many other Crops last weekend.

Imagine the look on our faces when we woke up on April 1st, 2010 – April Fool’s Day – to find that we could temporarily plant Nachos, one of mankind’s true achievements in food craftsmanship, in our virtual soil. It’s like something that an otherworldly force created specifically to make our dreams come true…Well, our virtual dreams, anyway. Let’s face it, sometimes you sit here and salivate over how delicious a Carrot Cake or Peanut Butter Cookie looks in your friend’s Goods Market. Sigh.

The Nachos Crop was slightly altered nearly a year ago, as several things remained the same with a few noteworthy changes. The Nachos Crop debuted as a swift, fun Crop, being ready for harvest in a mere only two hours, which made it tied with the Raspberries as the shortest harvest span in the game. They were available for all farmers at Level 5 or higher. Giving out 1 EXP per plot planted, the Crop would charge farmers 25 Coins to plant and give back 50 Coins, giving us a total net income gain of 25 Coins per plot.

Fast forward to around ten months later, and the opportunity to plant Nachos arrived once more in FarmVille as a celebration for the Super Bowl – titled the Football theme due to what we are guessing is copyright issues – and containing one of the most important elements that Limited Edition Crops have gained since the Nachos were last available in the game: the ability to be Mastered.

The Super Bowl seemed like a terrific time to unleash junk food that is horrible for you in a game littered with healthy vegetables like Broccoli and delicious, naturally pleasant sweets like Strawberries. After all, did you know that around 6,000 tons – yes, tons – of nachos are consumed annually during the Super Bowl? If that statistic indicates but one thing, it is that we clearly chose the wrong profession and need to head back to school for a degree in nachology, as it seems to be a booming field.

The Mastery change was a gigantic step in the right direction for the Nacho Crop’s longevity in the short week’s span of its availability. Something more subtle was also brewing for Zynga with the return of the Nachos, as the Crop was boosted ever-so-slightly in the net Coin gain. Instead of paying 25 Coins to receive 50 Coins upon harvest, you only had to cough up 20 Coins, still giving you a return of 50 Coins. While it may seem subtle, did you know that you could earn an additional 1,500 Coins for a farm of 300 plots with this slight alteration?

Of course, everything comes at a premium, and if you add from somewhere, you must subtract from another portion of the game; due to this, the Nachos were bumped from the incredibly-speedy two hours to the more casual four hours in harvest time. The lone upside to this is convenience, as many farmers cannot be around to plan their days strictly according to when a bunch of nachos will be growing out of the ground. If you’re like us, however, and you sit around on the computer all day, it is detrimental.

Unfortunately, it’s not like the Nachos are a powerhouse Crop when it comes to hard data; they’re simply cooler looking than your average Crop, hence why they are a popular Limited Edition entry into the Crop database. In fact, they’re only five Coins better than the most basic of all Crops, the Strawberries. Nachos earn the 50 Coins after spending 20, while the Strawberries only cost 10 to plant – half as much – and give 35 Coins, a 30 vs. 25 net gain. In fact, if you’re a new farmer, you’re better off planting Strawberries, since they will cost less.

But c’mon now, nobody plants the Nachos for the money. We all plant the Nachos to watch that liquid cheese somehow come out of the ground like the undead in a George A. Romero zombie film. Fear not! We are great at killing Nachos that come from below your feet. Once ready for harvesting, these Nachos are what we’d define as “fully loaded.” Full of guacamole, jalapeno slices, sour cream, and that delicious, salty cheese substance that’s not actually cheese but tastes like… well, awesomesauce?

To cap off this lengthy edition of Crop Spotlight, let us take a look at the Nacho Crop’s Mastery numbers. This is an incredibly easy Crop to achieve Crop Mastery, simply because it is only four hours, and shouldn’t take longer than two days for anyone with ample space on their farm dedicated to planting seeds.

• Mastery Level 1: 200 Harvests
• Mastery Level 2: 400 Harvests
• Mastery Level 3: 600 Harvests
• Grand Total: 1,200 Harvests

Stay tuned to FarmVille Post for more information on other Limited Edition Crops!
